Dear Readers and Residents of Darien,
So, like the rest of the world, we’ve been thinking a lot about AI lately. And certainly, there are many pros to it—with research, etc. The efficiencies and advances it brings are undeniable and we are grateful for them.
But we dare not cede our minds entirely to its shortcuts lest we lose the layers that feed our hearts and souls—the thought, learning and work that make life meaningful. Art, fine art, helps shield us from these pitfalls and we are pleased to aim your attention at our small contribution to this buffer in the selection of Darien’s most talented fine artists included here. You’ll find profiles of two very different paths to fine art in our cover story featuring Elizabeth Higgins (Betsy Jones) and Mary Morant, and a portfolio of the lovely of pairings of art and floral arrangements by the Garden Club of Darien from their recent “Art in Bloom” exhibit.
In this season of celebrations – the graduations we’ve come through, the marriages we’ve toasted, the ones yet to come, our country’s upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and all the special occasions ahead, have we got a line up for you!
From our annual spotlight on weddings of brides and grooms who grew up in town, to the thoughtful column on Declaration Day from Darien residents Terrie Wood and Jayme Stevenson with its accompanying shout out to Darien graduates currently attending service academies or serving in the military, to the champagne tutorial Seán Leary of Leary’s Liquor Cabinet contributed, it is editorial to toast – if we do say so ourselves!
As we wrap up the school year and head into summer, we thank Darien mom Tiere Hessert, who also holds an M.Ed from Bank Street College of Education, for her timely column on the benefits of giving our children the freedom to play. Thanks also to local architect Neil Hauck for weighing in with his point of view on “Balancing As We Build,” the cover story about our changing town in our last issue.
