Spring 2025

Letter to our readers

Dear Readers and Residents of Darien,

Happy spring!

In keeping with the growth and reinvigoration that comes with this great season, we’re pleased to present our cover story about the Darien Community Association (DCA) and the new multi-generational energy coming out of this 100-year-old nonprofit. It was so interesting to dive into how you give a legacy organization like this the kind of buzz it has generated the past year. (Hint: It starts with really good bones, strong leadership and committed volunteers and builds from the fun and community they create.) Special thanks to the DCA’s Flavie Lemarchand-Wood for her endless help with this. (The cover photo set up was her idea!)

A fitting coda to the cover story is the Mind Set column about the mental health benefits of community by DCA Board Member Elisabeth Drew and we are grateful to her for contributing it. Certainly the generations of residents who built and continue to frequent Darien’s Piedmont Club know deeply of what Elisabeth writes. Read about them and all they’ve added to our town in Peter Saverine’s article. (Thank you Peter!)

In honor of Earth Day in April, we present a thoughtful column, “Treasured Trees,” by Juliet Cain about the abundant gifts of trees. Be sure to note the invitation it contains to nominate your own treasured trees in town. We’re pleased to direct your attention to the House Tour column in this issue as well. What a story you’ll find there—such drama! …along with the inspiring philanthropy of generations of owners dedicated to preserving precious pieces of the property through donations to the Darien Land Trust. Big thanks to Darien Land Trust Executive Director Elizabeth Mathus for all she did to bring both of these articles to life.

You’ll find all this and more in the pages ahead including the story behind Restaurant L’Ostal, a fabulous spread of Mother’s Day gift ideas from local artists, entrepreneurs and businesses, as well as our health contributor Linda Stephens on “The Power of Accountability.”

We are especially excited to welcome two outstanding local businesses – Faye Kim Designs and Season’s Too – as advertisers in this issue. It is because of them, and all of our advertisers, we are able to continue to bring you this publication …and be the town we are.
