AS I WRITE THIS COLUMN highlighting a curated collection of some of Darien’s most visible yet quietly humble heroes, I am reading a current bestseller, Theo of Golden by Allen Levi. The novel explores themes of quiet generosity, everyday kindness and the transformative power of being truly seen—ideas that resonate deeply in our small town of just 12.9 square miles. Here, some of our greatest treasures are not places or landmarks, but the familiar, kind faces of people who are known simply for being nice. There are many others beyond this handful; Let us notice them, thank them and pay it forward as part of what we’re calling Project NICE 2026 – a reminder that kindness does not need a stage, it simply needs to be seen.
Noah Montenegro — Darien Post Office
For 30 years, Noah Montenegro has been the steady, welcoming presence at Darien’s Post Office, greeting generations of residents with patience and warmth. Raising two daughters with his wife in Stamford, Noah says, “Darien is a wonderful place with lovely people, and I am simply grateful to be able to help them every day for so long.” His kindness turns a routine errand into a moment of connection and often humor.
Blanche Parker & Marianne Paterniti — Darien Library
Between them, Blanche Parker and Marianne Paterniti represent nine decades of institutional knowledge—and heart—at Darien Library. Blanche is “a beloved ‘librarian’s librarian,’ who knows more about our collections and vast array of resources than anyone,” says Kierra Parrott, Executive Director of the Library, and she is often the first person patrons ask for; while Marianne’s visionary work includes creating one of the nation’s gold-standard library book group programs – Book Buzz, and Lit Tree Lane, which has quickly become an annual holiday tradition. Together, they embody the library’s role as Darien’s intellectual and communal family room.
José Achcar— Vavala’s
Towering over the counter and greeting everyone like an old friend, José is the unmistakable heart of Vavala’s. Known for his easy charm, playful banter and genuine friendliness, he brings warmth to every visit. When the owner’s not there, José is the face of the place. Longtime customer and friend Barbara Andrianus says, “(Seeing) José is like getting a big hug. He’s a tall man with an even warmer, bigger heart. Never have seen him have a bad day.”
Johnny Louisfin — Verizon Darien
To many in Darien, Johnny Louisfin is Verizon. For 17 years, he has managed the Darien Verizon store with empathy, patience and care—often working six days a week. He still remembers helping one customer recover a lifetime of lost photos and contacts. “I’m not a lifesaver,” he says, “but saving what matters most to someone feels pretty close.” A customer review stated, “Johnny was amazing in helping set up my new phone – he was kind, patient and the process was seamless! Perfect customer service!”
Nicole Berger & Regina Bethea — Rory’s
With more than three decades of combined service, Nicole Berger and Regina Bethea, as bartender and server dynamic duo, have helped make Rory’s feel like Darien’s comfortable living room. Always smiling, always welcoming, they are a big reason everyone truly feels known there—and always glad they came. As owner Bryan Malcarney says, “They are the soul of Rory’s. They are a big part of the reason Rory’s reputation as a friendly, local hangout continues to be strong.”
Linda O’Leary — Town of Darien
Linda O’Leary has spent 20 years at Town Hall—15 as Executive Assistant to the First Selectman—serving under four administrations with grace and good humor. “The variety and surprises keep the job fresh—and meaningful,” she says. First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky speaks of Linda, “Rest assured – regardless of who wins elections – Linda is the maestro of the First Selectman’s Office (and, let’s be honest, probably Town Hall), keeping four administrations on tempo with sharp wit, steady competence and just enough teasing to keep everyone honest. She’s as treasured – and as enduring – as the murals that adorn the walls of Town Hall.”
Tim Slavin — Downtown Darien
A Darien native, Tim Slavin has spent 14 years at one of our downtown drugstores doing what he loves most: connecting with people. Known for his friendly, reliable service, customers routinely ask for him by name. “Darien customers are very friendly,” Tim says—and he gives that warmth right back. He has been described by his supervisors as “Talented, tenacious and particularly determined in reaching his goals. With a great level of customer satisfaction, Tim has always been instrumental in the overall success of our team.”
Freddie & Judy Tuccinardi — Darien
Few people represent Darien’s spirit of resilience and gratitude like Freddie Tuccinardi, whose contagious positivity has touched countless neighbors, the Fire Departments (25 years), Palmer’s (19 years), and Ring’s End (5 years). With the steadfast love of his mother Judy, a lifelong Darien resident who lives her life in service (“She is like the Mother Theresa of Darien” her daughter Gina says, chuckling), having raised four children and recently retired after 16 years as a school aid, Freddie gives constant thanks for his community. His Darien friends have rallied around the family for decades to fund renovations to his home and bathroom, an accessible van and therapies for which they are grateful every day.
